An SUV earns its keep in Bali when you're travelling with kids and luggage, or heading up to Ubud and Kintamani where the roads climb and the surface gets patchy. You sit well above the scooter traffic. Six or seven people fit with room to spare, and the higher ground clearance shrugs off potholes and the flooding that shows up after heavy rain. We rent recent automatics like the Toyota Fortuner or Innova, and we confirm the exact daily rate on WhatsApp before you commit.

How it works

1. 1Tap through to WhatsApp and tell us your dates, where you're staying and roughly how many of you there'll be. If you've got a particular model in mind, a Fortuner or just something with a bigger boot, tell us.
2. 2We check what's free for those dates, confirm the daily rate and the deposit, and put you with a rental owner we've used for years. Nothing is booked until the number suits you.
3. 3The car comes to your villa at the time you pick. Most of our owners run fuel full to full, and we confirm the exact arrangement when we confirm the booking. The owner runs you through the controls, sorts the paperwork and hands over the keys.
4. 4You pay the owner directly, usually in cash, and settle any fuel when you bring the car back. We stay reachable on WhatsApp for the whole hire in case anything comes up.

Common questions

Do I need a special licence to drive it myself?

Yes. Bring your home driving licence and an International Driving Permit, which you arrange in your own country before you fly. Police run checkpoints around the south fairly often and will ask to see both. If you'd rather not take on Bali traffic yourself, we can put a driver with the car for the day, which plenty of guests do for airport runs or longer trips up north.

Will you bring it to the villa?

Yes, delivery covers villas anywhere from Canggu down to Uluwatu, with collection from the same spot at the end. For the far south some owners add a small delivery fee, which we fold into the price we quote you, so the number you agree is the number you pay. Give us a rough arrival time and the car will be there waiting. If you're landing at the airport and want it there instead, tell us and we'll set a meeting point at the terminal.

How many people and how much luggage will it hold?

The common SUVs here, the Fortuner and Innova, seat seven and take a good stack of bags, though seven adults with full suitcases is a genuine squeeze. For a family of four or five with cases and a pram, there's room to spare. If you need to carry surfboards, ask when you book and we'll find a car with a roof rack where one's free for your dates.

What about insurance, the deposit and fuel?

Cover varies from owner to owner, so before you commit we tell you exactly what insurance comes with the car, what the excess is, and the deposit. The owner takes the deposit in cash and hands it back when the car comes home undamaged. Most owners run fuel full to full, and we confirm the exact arrangement with your booking, so you know before the keys change hands.

Can I keep it for several days and drive it out of the area?

Yes, and a multi-day hire brings the daily rate down, so ask for a price on your whole stretch rather than booking a night at a time. The car is happy on long days down to Uluwatu or up to the lakes around Munduk. What it can't do is cross to Nusa Penida or the Gili Islands, since it won't go on the fast boats, so those trips you'd do by ferry or hire a local car once you're over there.
