Nusa Penida is the island behind most of the Bali photos you have already seen, the one with the T-Rex shaped cliff at Kelingking and the pale blue water at Broken Beach. You get there on a fast boat from Sanur, then spend the day driving between the big clifftop viewpoints and stopping to snorkel, often with manta rays at Manta Point. Most guests do it as one long day out from their villa and are home in time for dinner.

How it works

1. 1Tap the service and send us a WhatsApp with your date, how many of you are coming, and what you are most keen to see: the clifftop viewpoints or a snorkel with the mantas.
2. 2We confirm the price, book your seats on a fast boat from Sanur, and line up a driver and car for the day. The island roads are rough, so you want someone who knows them. We sort the villa pickup too, so you are not making your own way to the harbour at dawn.
3. 3On the day, you cross from Sanur to Nusa Penida in about 45 minutes. Your driver takes you between the viewpoints you picked, and the boat crew hand out snorkel gear at the water. It is a full day, so expect an early start and an evening return.
4. 4You pay on the day, usually in cash: the boat tickets at the harbour before you board, and the driver at the end. We spell out the exact arrangement when we confirm your booking. Keep a bit aside in small notes for the beach entrance fees and parking, which are not part of the trip price.

Common questions

Will I actually see manta rays?

Most days, yes. Manta Point sits on the south coast and the rays feed there all year, so sightings are common but never promised. The water there can get choppy, and if the swell is too big the crew will move you to a calmer spot like Crystal Bay or Gamat Bay. If the mantas are the whole reason you are going, tell us, and we will aim for a morning boat, when the swell tends to be smaller.

Can we see the whole island in one day?

Not really, and anyone who promises you can is rushing you. The island is bigger than it looks and the roads are slow. Most people pick one side. The west run covers Kelingking, Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong; the east has Diamond Beach and Atuh. Add the manta snorkel by boat and the day is full. Send us your top two or three sights and we will build the day around them.

How fit do I need to be for Kelingking?

The viewpoint itself is an easy walk from the car park. Getting down to the beach is the hard part. It is a steep, uneven climb on wooden and rock steps, maybe 30 to 45 minutes down and longer coming back up in the heat. Plenty of people just take the photo from the top and skip it. If you have dodgy knees, or young kids with you, that is completely normal and no one will push you to go down.

What is included, and what should I bring?

The price covers your return fast boat, the driver and car on the island, and snorkel gear with a life jacket. It does not cover lunch, the small entrance fees at each beach, or parking, so bring cash. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a dry bag for your phone, and shoes you can actually walk in. If you own reef shoes, they help on the rocky entries.

I get seasick. Is the crossing rough?

The Sanur crossing is short, about 45 minutes, but the water between the islands can bounce around, especially at midday and in the windier months. If you are prone to it, take a tablet before you board and sit low and towards the back. Say so in your message and we will try to get you on an earlier boat, when the crossing is usually calmer.
